Drawing and Painting 2
Students will further develop the concepts from Draw/Paint 1, as well as provide a deeper understanding of the elements and principles of design. Students will be introduced to new drawing and painting techniques and media. They will create drawings utilizing processes such as sketching, rendering, contour, gesture, and perspective drawing. Students will also experience sequential learning that encompasses various painting techniques.

How to Use Oil Pastels:
Oil pastel (also called wax oil crayon) is a painting and drawing medium with characteristics similar to pastels and wax crayons. Oil pastels consist of
pigment mixed with a non-drying oil and wax binder. The surface of an oil pastel painting is therefore less powdery, but more difficult to protect with a fixative.

Look at the pear drawing in the tutorial and try to replicate it on practice paper.
concept: CREATING COMPOSITION
Creating A Unique Compostion:
Students will apply all past knowledge to this still life drawing, with a focus on creating a composition that utilizes a focal point: contrast, isolation, convergence, placement, or the unusual. Students will create a composition with objects found in the classroom using one of the five focal point concepts and take a picture of it. Students may print their photo if they choose. Students will draw the from the photo that they've taken.
You may add things to your composition that may not appear in the photo. Look HERE for examples. Students will use graphite pencil to complete the drawing.

Medium:
Oil Pastel
One technique that can be used in painting with oil pastels is by using pointillism. Oil pastels are a great medium for this type of approach, because the oil pastels will not bleed into each other, although there can be some layering done (my recommendation is to not over-do layering when using pointillism).

concept: SURREALISM
Juxtaposition in Black and White
​
Surrealistic drawing in black and white color pencil on brown kraft paper.
Students will first take a picture of a set of hands - their own or someone else. They will then search for and add other images and elements to their hand composition to create a Surrealistic drawing. Students will potentially need to change the scale of certain images in order to incorporate them successfully into their composition. Multiple Elements and Principles will be utilized in this drawing, specifically: unity, proportion, space, and contrast.

concept: INTRO TO WATER COLOR
Water Color Tutorial
​
Water Color is a painting method in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a
water-based solution. Watercolor refers to both the medium and the resulting artwork. For this practice, students will follow the step-by-step tutorial by Spencer Meagher. The intent is to become familiar with this medium. Therefore, the subject will all be the same, but the results will be determined by the student's ability to manipulate water color.

Line and Contour
​
Cross-contour lines are very much an attitude about and approach to drawing. They are the lines that reflect the movement of your eye in and around what you see. While contour lines describe edges, cross-contours describe form and volume.

Cityscape Painting: Fauvism
​
Students will learn about the Fauvist movement and use their knowledge to create an acrylic painting of a cityscape on canvas board. Ideally, students will use a photograph that they have taken. Otherwise, students will find a cityscape from the Internet and make it unique with the colors of the Fauves.

concept: MIXED MEDIA
In visual art, mixed media is an artwork in which more than one medium or material has been employed. Assemblages and collages are two common examples of art using different media that will make use of different materials including cloth, paper, and/or wood.
Mixed Media: Paper and Drawing Tools
​Students will lay a foundation of different paper types on chip board. Once a subject has been determined, students will lightly sketch it on the papers. A different drawing tool will be used as the subject changes paper surfaces. For example, white color pencil may be used on black paper and then transfer to color pencil on book pages.

When choosing a subject, focus on the Principle of Movement. Does your subject choice already show movement or will you have to arrange in a way that movement is created?
